Deputy Speaker Commends Opposition Party

  • Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Solomon Thomas Segepoh (in photo) of Constituency 089 Bonthe district, on Tuesday 10th July 2018, commended the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) party as constructive.
    He made that recommendation during the adoption and passage of a Bill entitled “ The Finance Agreement” (Additional Financing for the West African Power Pool Cote d’ Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Power Interconnection Project), between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the International Development Association (IDA),  and “The Extractive Industries Revenue Act 2018”, which has been an Act to provide and coordinate various taxes and charges on extractive industries, the regulation of fiscal aspects of extractive industry agreements and for other related matters presented by the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Honorable Jacob Jusu Saffa in the Well of Parliament on Tuesday 10th July 2018.
    Hon. Deputy Speaker further described the agreement to be developmentally oriented to generate revenue mobilization as according to him there is no development without electricity particularly the private sector. He added that, sustainable energy helps motivate investors to willingly invest in the country with special reference to the seriousness that they will forge ahead to facilitate development.
    In his contribution, Chairman of Finance, Hon. Francis Amara Kai -Samba of Constituency 020 Kenema District also described the agreement as fine without any controversy for the development of the country.
    He said the Interconnection of the power pool between the four countries is a laudable venture to improve energy.
    Chief Whip of the main opposition, Hon. Abdul Hassan Sesay of Constituency 050 Tonkolili District described the Bill as good but needed Parliamentary debate.
    Hon. Bashiru Sidikie of Constituency 082 Bo District expressed appreciation and said the Bill is a good agreement not only for Sierra Leone but for the good of the sub-region and disclosed that, 225 KVA agreements are not conventional but to boost the socio-economic growth of the ordinary citizen.
    Hon. Aaron Aruna Koroma of Constituency 048 Tonkolili District noted that; electricity is one of the signs and symptoms of human development in every nation. He said the SLPP government inherited the agreement from the past regime of the APC government.
    According to him the Bill Agreement has no exception but with a loan of  USD 59 million adding that development is a continual process and assured that twenty- four chiefdoms will be benefiting from the agreement.
    Hon. Zainab Catherine Tarawally of Constituency 037 Bombali District noted that; water and electricity is a national development despite been major challenges in the rural setting. She added that; electricity must be a hundred percent item of national development.
    She spoke about the need for affordable and efficient energy to boost economic growth
